Trust is the ultimate currency and credibility is your greatest asset. People must first trust you before they will follow you or listen to what you have to say.
As a CEO or business owner, you must build trust in your business from the inside out. Start with your people. Internal trust is the foundation for external trust in the marketplace with partners, customers, investors, the community, and even families.
Stephen M.R. Covey, the author of The New York Times bestselling book, The Speed of Trust, and Co-Founder & Global Practice Leader of FranklinCovey’s Trust Practice, recently presented four key behaviors necessary to build trust and credibility in uncertain times.
Take things head-on, even bad things. Don’t avoid the bad news. You need the full story so that you will be able to work with your team to develop a solution to the problem.
Be open and don’t hide or cover things up. If you don’t yet have the full story, tell people what you know and what you don’t know. Tell them what you’re doing to find out and when you’ll come back to them with an update.
Be honest, tell the truth. Don’t spin or sugar coat things. People may not always like what you have to say, but if you always tell the truth, they will know that they can trust what you say.
Leaders must extend trust to their people. With many people working remotely, you can choose to trust or not trust that members of your team are working. Extending trust to others will get that behavior reciprocated back to you.
Also, show people that you care. How you treat people during the current crisis will be remembered.
